About the Webinar:
Fraud has always been an issue for organic, but the request that inspectors talk about fraud during the inspection is new since Strengthening Organic Enforcement (published Jan. 19, 2023. Fully implemented March 19, 2024).At the same time, good inspections require cooperation between operators and inspectors. Suspicion and trust tend to be mutually exclusive. Since SOE, inspectors have to actively work to create the trust it takes to cooperate. Interpersonal skills are often dismissed as personality traits; yet, there are principles that can be learned.
There have been many changes to strengthen organic integrity over the last years, culminating in SOE. Fraud has always been an issue for organic, but since SOE, inspectors actually need to talk about it with the operator. This can be challenging when operators misunderstand the context and feel threatened or offended. Inspectors are finding strategies to restore a sense of cooperation, as is necessary for a fruitful inspection. At the same time, an operator may indeed be committing fraud, and the inspector needs to remain aware of that. In this training, we explore these conflicting expectations and how they impact the work of an inspector. We will explore how one can be a stand for organic integrity while navigating this complex human interaction called organic inspection.
