Summary:

Contact's Statement: I have been so intimately and completely involved with vegetable growing for the last ten years that it is difficult for me to summarize what I can offer. All I can say is when I inspect a vegetable operation, large or small, it is very difficult to fool me. I am familiar with and can identify just about every major and minor pest and disease for practically every vegetable and common herb that grows in temperate North American climates, plus strawberries and asparagus. I am up to date on: preventative methods and disease and insect controls, both allowed and prohibited; soil fertility; seed suppliers (those who sell organic and/or untreated and those who do not) and varieties; specialized machinery; and post harvest handling. Having grown thousands of organic seedlings at once in a 20x40 greenhouse, I have comprehensive knowledge of the problems in greenhouse growing, the acceptable media and pest/disease controls. Most of this knowledge has been gathered by direct experience, plus attendance at workshops and conferences (especially the Upper Midwest Organic Farming Conference), by subscribing to agricultural publications, and by accumulating a reference library. ATTRA and Growing for Market (a newsletter for market gardeners) have been especially valuable resources, as well as the local Extension service (for mostly conventional agriculture). I have not availed myself of websites, except for ATTRA's website and the Illinois Extension website. I have not been involved with vegetable crops grown for export.
